Moving to first house: Where to start?

We finally took the plunge and have bought a house on the outskirts of hannover (herrenhausen area). We can’t move in until around the end of October / start of November. However, we do not want the usual last minute pack boxes and stress associated with many moves we’ve with helped with. Its all in the planning. Sooo, we are starting now with the “clean out cellar” part. A feat in itself as it is full of crap saved up over the years. In Germany no-one will collect anything unless you list it on paper first (what a surprise I hear you say). Anyway, its fight our way into the cellar time and start taking things slowly with the car to the dump. At least enough so that we can actually get an overview of all the sh*te that’s in there and then list it for the container people. Then once the cellars sorted we fill it again with the crap around the house so we can then go thrpough the above process again :-) . What joy.

We are going to the new house tonight to have another look and at least start on room planning. I’m, taking my camcorder with me so we can do some planning when we get back. The cellar, with a bar and small cinema, is my baby. I know what I’m doing with that area. The rest of the house however will not be so easy. Which walls to break through, which rooms are the study/work rooms, which room to take for a bedroom, do we want a fitness room etc.

They reckon moving house is in the top 3 of stressful activities anyone can do. Behind death in the family and child birth. We are 3 months away and can see what they mean!

Hi, yes, indeed, I moved to Hannover 2 years ago and the memory is still vived and gives me occasional nightmares.. Not to put you off, though, many congratulations on your new house! Didn’t you just do up your present house last year, I remember times without bathroom access were mentioned and all that, was that to sell it better? Have you seen the house doctor, that gives you all the tipps and tricks on selling. Mind you, my sister and her boyfriend are looking to buy in Bristol and went to view a 4 bedroom house for 480 K (Pounds, not Euro !!!)(makes one faint, but it is actually not an extortionate amount for a house in an up market area, it still is a seller’s market, even if the bubble has burst). And it was in a disgraceful condition, completely unkept, the 3 kids living there had covered curtains, carpets, absolutely everything in felttip, dirty dishes, doors broken or missing, doghair, cobwebs and dust everywhere, you get the picture… One would have thought, that trying to sell a house would warrant at least a little tidy up…Not really enticing, the idea of spending a fortune for something like that!

Anyway, good for you starting early with the clear up, that’s the way to go to at least limit the moval stress to a minimum.

Good luck, Tania

Hi Tania,
Yep, not that long ago we had a new kitchen and bathroom installed in our rented flat. Sods law of course we decide to buy a house only 5 moths afterwards. The house we bought was originally 510.000 but we knocked them down to 425 k. Its the perfec tlocation. only 6 tram stops from the bahnhof, and is free standing. Cant wait to move in!

Just had a look over in Newcastle. House prices are not falling at all! Bloody terrace for £ 250,000. Anything decent in a not so brill suberb is at least 450,000.

I wonder what London and the home counties would be like. Herrenhausen is not such a bad choice then… except for the endless “Kleines Fest”, “Feuerwerk-Festival” and the like. I know, I’ve lived here for almost 20 years…

When I moved to Germany first I had just 3 bags with me, now five years later I can’t start to think of how much stuff I have (beds, wardrobes, a kitchen, TV, computers), and how much of it is crap that I could do without.

Best of luck with the moving in Alan !

Don´t suppose you could spare us a couple of square metres could you?:)

Looking forward to a bit o´ the old 80´s.
