Open Letter To Deutsche Bahn Catering

Dear Deutsche Bahn Catering Management,

I really like your currywurst and your cheese and ham hot paninis (schinkenpause?). Should I be in first class your staff serve the aforementioned to my seat or if I’m in your Bistro I can get them there.

However, if I am sat 3 meters away in your restaurant and want any of the above I am told that “this is not possible, you must order from the restaurant menu”. Now I’m a reasonable man, but for the life of me can’t understand why when it all comes from the same “kitchen” you cant bring me a panini or currywurst to my seat in the restaurant.

Most travellers in a restaurant sit there because they just want a seat or a drink and maybe they are tempted by one of the very few choices you have on your “restaurant” menu. Please tell me why it is such a big deal for me to have a panini or currywurst whilst sat in the restaurant when it all comes from the same place and just 3 meters away in the Bistro its not a problem? its even done by the same staff.

I asked one of your staff exactly this. He went bright red, hesitated and told me that “we only serve in the restaurant what is on the menu, you can get your panini next door.” And then, interestingly, rubbed his thumb and forefinger together in the well known gesture meaning money. In other words “We want all those in the restaurant to pay our extortionate prices for badly cooked food. Paninis are only for the cheap seats in the bistro”

The mind boggles.

Hi Alan, at the end of the day it is all about money. You have to face this basic truth. And if there is a de-facto monopoly in one sector, it only can get worse…
Cheers
Dirk

in a train you´re a “captive audience” – they can charge what they want – it´s not as though you can go to the chip shop round the corner if you don´t like what´s on offer.
