Hannover: Reasons to be proud

Hanoverians are pretty understated. They rarely champion things that they really should be proud about.

From the following thread in Xing (in German) you can find some interesting things about Hannover and it’s achievements…

  • The vinyl record was invented in Hannover (Nordstadt)
  • The first long play record was produced in Hannover
  • The first commercial CD production took place in Hannover (Langenhagen)
  • The Gramophone was invented here.
  • The first “tea shop” in continental Europe was in Hannover.
  • The first conveyor production of confectionery was in Hannover (Bahlsen)
  • The invention and patent for the PAL TV system was in Hannover (Telefunken/Walter Bruch)
  • The groups Scooter, Scorpions, RnB singer Mark Morrison were born or at least based in Hannover.
  • Cartoonist Uli Stein, Comedian Oliver Pocher, and Imke Brügger (TV series “Unter Uns”) are Hanoverians
  • The manufacturing and selling of the worlds most expensive ear phones (Sennheiser Orpheus, 30 thousand. DM)
  • The worlds first tires with profiles (Continental)
  • The oldest German flea market is here.
  • The reformation of the the SPD party took place in the street I live in (Jacobsstr.) after the II world war.
  • The biggest fountain in Europe (Herrenhausen Gardens)
  • The “Eilenriede” is the largest (city) forest in Europe.

I cannot and don’t have time to verify as absolute fact all of the above. So if you know anything to be false let me know and I’ll remove it.

Regarding the “tea shop”… they still exist. It’s Tee-Seeger at Rathenaustraße (Kröpcke), founded 1743. Some facts here: http://www.tee-seeger.de/?page_id=31

The inventor of the record was of course Emil Berliner (the workshop in the Hannoverian Nordstadt still exists), who in his later years went to the US to found “His Master’s Voice”. I believe everyone in this world has once seen the little dog in front of the grammophone…

Nice blog! I look forward to future posts.

Oh and don’t forget the worlds most exclusive kitchen knives are produced in Hannover-Wunstorf. They make one which sells for about €60,000. Can’t remember the name of the company though, sorry…

Know it all Ruthemann strikes again!;)

Ha! – Oliver Pocher actually comes from Altwarmbüchen.

Till Schweiger is supposed to be from here as well, but I believe he was actually boen in Freiburg/Breisgau.

@ Richard LOL
Yeah… sorry, can’t help myself.
